India women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team books spot in Commonwealth Games

India’s women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team has secured qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , marking a significant milestone for para sports in the country.

The Games will be held from July 23 to August 2 , with the 3x3 wheelchair basketball competition scheduled between July 24 and July 29 at the Scottish Event Campus.

India secured its place in the Commonwealth Games through the Asia Oceania qualification pathway under the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation system. In the women’s category, only two teams participated in the qualifying event, and both India and Australia were awarded direct entry into the Games , representing the Asia and Oceania regions respectively.

The development comes as a strong boost for India’s para athletes, who continue to expand their presence on the international stage. While the women’s team sealed qualification, the men’s team narrowly missed out after finishing fourth in the same competition.

According to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, the final two spots in both the men’s and women’s events will be decided through wildcard selections . These will be based on factors such as regional representation, past performances, and participation in development programmes.

In the confirmed women’s lineup so far, hosts Scotland will be joined by Nigeria (Africa), India (Asia), Australia (Oceania), Canada (Americas), and England (Europe) , forming a competitive global field.

Australia topped the men’s standings with an unbeaten run to secure the Oceania spot, while Malaysia clinched Asia qualification after finishing second.

India’s qualification is being seen as an encouraging step forward, reflecting the growing depth and progress of wheelchair basketball in the country as it prepares for one of the biggest multi-sport stages in the Commonwealth.
