India Women Advance to World Cup Second Round After Gritty Draw Against England
India’s women’s hockey team booked their place in the second round of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup after holding England to a goalless draw in their final Pool D match in Amstelveen on Thursday.
The result earned India one valuable point, taking their tally to five points and securing second place in the pool behind China. China finished on seven points after two wins and a draw, while India progressed to the next stage without suffering a defeat.
India began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against China before producing an emphatic 6-1 victory over South Africa. A draw against England was enough to guarantee their passage into the next round, but the final contest tested their defensive resolve.
India made a positive start and looked composed in the opening half. However, England gradually seized control and began applying sustained pressure, forcing the Indian side to retreat deeper into its defensive structure.
The hosts created several opportunities and won 11 penalty corners, but failed to convert any of them. India’s compact defence remained organised under pressure, repeatedly blocking England’s attempts and preventing the hosts from finding the breakthrough.
As the match progressed, India concentrated on protecting the crucial result rather than taking unnecessary risks. England continued to press aggressively, but the Indian defence held firm until the final whistle.
The draw was a significant result for India, who showed resilience against a side capable of creating constant attacking pressure. Their ability to remain disciplined when England dominated possession ultimately proved decisive.
India now advance to the second round, carrying the confidence of an unbeaten pool-stage campaign. After demonstrating both attacking firepower against South Africa and defensive resilience against England, they will look to build on that momentum in the knockout phase.
The road ahead will be tougher, but India have given themselves a strong platform to continue their World Cup campaign.
