India Weather Today: India Bakes In Uneven Heatwave As Storms Tease The South

India wakes up on May 21 not as one country, but as several, each experiencing a version of May so different from the other that they may as well be on separate continents. And while the privileged debate whether to turn the AC up another notch, millions of daily wage workers, farmers, and the urban poor have no such choice.

Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana are under severe heat wave warnings, with West Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha not far behind. New Delhi is forecast to hit a punishing 112°F (44.4°C) , with overnight lows barely dropping to 86°F (30°C) meaning there is no real escape, not even after sunset. Kolkata, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal simmer under hot and humid conditions that feel, to anyone who has experienced them, like breathing inside a pressure cooker. Mumbai, India's most populous city, sits sullen and sticky coastal humidity making every degree feel like three. Central India Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha bake between 40°C and 44°C , a region already crushed under agricultural distress that needs another heatwave like it needs a drought. And it frequently gets both.

The hill states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand see some Western Disturbance activity offering marginal relief, but nothing dramatic enough to write home about. Meanwhile, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Karnataka, and the Northeast Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura receive pre-monsoon thunderstorms with gusty winds hitting 40–50 kmph , a teasing preview of the relief that the entire country desperately craves.

The IMD had flagged El Niño evolving conditions as a key driver of May 2026's weather, forecasting temperatures to be normal to below normal for many parts cold comfort for the north, which clearly didn't receive that particular memo. Historically, India's worst heatwave years have seen hundreds of deaths; 2026 is shaping up to add grimly to that record, with hospitals on alert and power grids groaning under unprecedented electricity demand.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala around May 26 notably earlier than the standard June 1 onset, offering a rare sliver of good news. For farmers watching cracked soil and workers collapsing on roadsides, it cannot arrive a single day too soon. India is not merely experiencing weather, it is enduring it.
