India, US reaffirm Quad commitment to safeguard Indo-Pacific stability

India and the United States have reiterated their commitment to strengthening cooperation through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) to ensure a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. The reaffirmation comes as both sides highlighted the grouping’s role in safeguarding regional security and promoting economic growth.

The discussions took place during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Senator Marco Rubio in Washington on Monday.. Officials said the two leaders reviewed ongoing collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and underlined the importance of resilient supply chains, transparent infrastructure development, maritime security, and emerging technologies.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that both countries view the Quad which also includes Japan and Australia as a cornerstone for regional peace and stability. Senator Rubio stressed that sustained cooperation was necessary to counter challenges facing the Indo-Pacific, while Jaishankar reiterated India’s support for inclusive growth and adherence to international law in the region.

The reaffirmation of Quad priorities comes against the backdrop of rising geopolitical competition and increasing concerns over disruptions in global trade routes. Both New Delhi and Washington emphasized that the Indo-Pacific must remain open to all nations and free from coercive practices.

Before arriving in Washington, DC, Jaishankar was in New York, where he inaugurated an exhibition at the United Nations on ‘The Human Cost of Terrorism,’ highlighting the need to expose state sponsorship of terrorism.

The Quad officially promotes a free, rules-based Indo-Pacific, though not labeled “anti-China,” its activities indirectly counter China’s maritime expansion, including artificial islands and militarization. India’s border clashes with China and concern over Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean align its strategic interests with the U.S., which seeks to balance Beijing’s regional influence.

Quad initiatives are maritime domain awareness, joint naval exercises, and freedom of navigation operations—strengthen regional surveillance and deterrence. India-U.S. cooperation is a functional convergence to secure maritime and territorial stability without a formal alliance, blending strategic alignment with public non-confrontation.
