India, US poised to seal first tranche of Bilateral Trade Deal by Fall
India and the United States are moving steadily toward finalizing the first tranche of their Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with both sides hopeful of concluding the deal by the fall deadline, government sources said on Monday.
A high-level Indian trade delegation is set to travel to Washington this week for intensive discussions aimed at resolving pending issues and sealing the initial segment of the agreement. Officials said the negotiations will focus on market access, regulatory cooperation, and expanding trade in energy and technology sectors.
Energy cooperation remains a key priority, with India seeking to boost imports of natural gas and renewable energy technologies from the US. “India is exploring avenues to buy more gas and renewables from the US. This aligns with our clean energy transition goals and helps diversify energy sources,” a senior official said.
The BTA discussions also aim to address trade in technology, including semiconductors, critical raw materials, and advanced manufacturing solutions, strengthening economic ties between the two countries. Regulatory alignment and intellectual property rights protection are expected to be key topics during the Washington talks.
In parallel, India’s negotiations with the European Union for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are progressing, though several critical issues remain unresolved. Challenges include the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), as well as trade concerns in steel, automobiles, and agriculture. An Indian trade delegation is scheduled to visit Brussels later this month to bridge differences and push the FTA process forward.
Officials emphasized that discussions with the EU are constructive, with both sides working to address regulatory and tariff concerns in a balanced manner. “The Indian side has been actively engaging with the EU on all outstanding matters, including sustainability-linked trade measures,” an official noted.
Both trade tracks – with the US and EU – are part of India’s broader strategy to enhance global economic partnerships, secure resilient supply chains, and strengthen its position amid evolving geopolitical and trade dynamics. Analysts said concluding the first tranche with the US could also pave the way for accelerated discussions on subsequent phases of the agreement.
India and the US have held multiple rounds of trade talks over the past year, alternating between New Delhi and Washington. Discussions have focused on energy, technology, market access, and regulatory cooperation, laying the groundwork for the first tranche of the Bilateral Trade Agreement.
