The eighth edition of the India-US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Exercise 2026 concluded at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on August 14, strengthening specialised maritime cooperation between the two countries.

The bilateral exercise brought Indian and US Navy teams together for professional interaction, demonstrations, cross-training and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs). The programme focused on sharing operational knowledge and best practices for dealing with complex explosive and underwater threats.

Key EOD areas included improvised explosive device (IED) threats, render-safe procedures and mine neutralisation. Personnel also examined the employment of unmanned underwater systems, reflecting the growing importance of technology in detecting and managing hazards beneath the surface.

The cross-training phase expanded the scope of the engagement to specialised diving disciplines. Teams trained in wreck location and salvage, specialist equipment and slithering operations, helping personnel gain familiarity with techniques and procedures used by their counterparts.

The exercise was significant not only for individual skill development but also for operational readiness. Working together during practical training allowed personnel to better understand each other's procedures, equipment and methods, potentially reducing coordination gaps during future joint or coordinated missions.

The exchange of specialised expertise also strengthened mutual understanding between the two navies. Familiarity with common operational practices is particularly important for EOD and diving teams, whose missions require precision, technical competence and close coordination.

The exercise carries wider relevance for maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Underwater mines, explosive devices, wrecks and other submerged hazards can threaten naval vessels, commercial shipping, ports and maritime infrastructure. Stronger capabilities in underwater reconnaissance, mine neutralisation, salvage and explosive-threat management can improve the ability to respond to such challenges.
