India unveils upgraded passport services and e-Passports for citizens worldwide

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday announced the successful rollout of the upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP V2.0) , the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP V2.0) , and the introduction of e-passports for citizens in India and abroad. The move is aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and convenience in passport services.

PSP V2.0, implemented on 26 May 2025, now connects all 37 Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across India into a digitally integrated ecosystem. Citizens can benefit from AI-powered chat and voice support for guidance while filling applications or resolving passport-related grievances. The upgraded website and mobile app streamline the application process with auto-filled forms, simplified document uploads, and cashless payments via UPI or QR codes, reducing errors and saving time. Real-time tracking and automated alerts further enhance transparency.

On 28 October 2025, GPSP V2.0 was launched across Indian Embassies and Consulates worldwide, offering non-resident Indians (NRIs) the same seamless, digital passport services as citizens in India. The centralized global system accelerates processing, verification, and delivery for NRIs while maintaining service consistency across countries.

A significant milestone accompanying these upgrades is the introduction of e-passports. These hybrid passports combine traditional paper with an embedded RFID chip and antenna that securely store the holder’s data in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. Critical information is stored electronically, enabling faster authentication and stronger security. Going forward, all new passports will be issued as e-passports, while existing non-electronic passports remain valid until their expiry.

The launch of PSP V2.0, GPSP V2.0, and e-passports reflects the Government’s commitment to leveraging technology for ease of living, ensuring faster, safer, and smoother travel for Indian citizens globally. By integrating advanced digital tools and modern security features, the MEA aims to bring Indian passport services on par with international standards, benefiting both domestic applicants and NRIs.
