India to Host Afghanistan for Three-Match T20I Series in Delhi in September

India are set to play Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in Delhi from September 13 to 17, a development that appears to have dashed Bangladesh’s hopes of hosting a long-pending white-ball series against the Men in Blue.

The BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) jointly announced the schedule on Wednesday. The series will be played at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium, with matches scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17.

The Afghanistan fixtures clash with the September window proposed for the postponed India-Bangladesh bilateral series. The India-Bangladesh engagement was put on hold last year amid political unrest in Bangladesh, and there had been hopes of rescheduling it during the upcoming international window.

The Afghanistan series is part of the ACB’s Future Tours Programme and is being treated as a home assignment for Afghanistan. Due to the volatile political situation in the country, India has increasingly served as a base for Afghanistan’s home fixtures.

Afghanistan most recently toured India for a three-match ODI series in June 2026, while the two teams previously met in a three-match T20I series in January 2024. India also hosted Afghanistan for their historic first Test in 2018, marking an important milestone in their cricketing relationship.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas said India remains committed to supporting the development of Afghanistan cricket by providing regular opportunities to compete against quality opposition.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia highlighted the growing popularity of Afghanistan’s players among Indian fans and the strong bond between the two cricketing nations.

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf described the series as a significant milestone, saying it would create opportunities in commercial, technical and cricketing areas while further strengthening ties with the BCCI.

Delhi and District Cricket Association president Rohan Jaitley also assured both teams of the best possible facilities for the three-match series.
