India produced a commanding performance against arch-rivals Pakistan, securing a 5-3 victory in their final Pool D match of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen on Wednesday.
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh and forward Abhishek were the stars of India's attacking show, scoring two goals apiece as the Indian side maintained its grip on the high-profile contest.
Harmanpreet opened the scoring in the fifth minute, converting a penalty corner with composure. India quickly built on the advantage, with Abhishek finding the net in the 11th minute through a fine field goal.
Harmanpreet struck again in the 21st minute, once more making the most of a penalty corner to put India firmly in control.
Pakistan responded almost immediately. Hannan Shahid pulled one back in the 22nd minute, but India's attacking momentum remained relentless. Abhishek restored the two-goal cushion just two minutes later with another impressive field goal.
Pakistan's Sufyan Khan then scored in the 24th minute, keeping the contest alive as the teams headed into the second half with India leading 4-2.
India extended their advantage in the 35th minute when vice-captain Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke.
Pakistan refused to give up and Hannan Shahid scored again in the 46th minute to reduce the deficit to two goals. However, India held their nerve through the closing stages to complete a memorable 5-3 victory over their arch-rivals.
The result gave India a strong finish to their Pool D campaign, with Harmanpreet and Abhishek's braces underlining the depth of India's attacking threat.
