India’s sprint relay teams are set for a crucial test at the World Athletics Relays , with the two-day event in Gaborone offering a direct pathway to the World Athletics Championships 2027 . As one of the most competitive relay meets globally, the championship brings together top sprinting nations, making qualification both challenging and highly rewarding.

India has fielded a 21-member contingent , including eight women , competing in five events men’s and women’s 4x100m, men’s 4x400m, and the mixed 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Despite qualifying in all six categories, the team has chosen to skip the women’s 4x400m , reflecting a strategic call by selectors.

Leading the squad is Animesh Kujur , one of India’s fastest sprinters and a national record holder , symbolising the country’s growing sprint ambitions. His presence highlights a shift in Indian athletics, which is increasingly focusing on speed events and relay coordination to improve its global standing.

The format ensures high-pressure competition from the outset. On day one, teams must finish among the top two in their heats , or rank among the next fastest , to reach the finals and secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Championships. Those who miss out will have a second chance in additional rounds on day two.

A key highlight is the return of the mixed 4x100m relay , a relatively new event that demands precise baton exchanges and tactical sequencing of runners. India faces a tough opening heat against strong sprinting nations , underlining the narrow margin for error.

Although India enters from a lower ranking bracket , recent improvements in relay timings and national records provide optimism. The Athletics Federation of India has increasingly prioritised relay events, recognising their potential for quicker success on the international stage.

With qualification, prize money, and global ranking points at stake, the competition in Gaborone is more than just another meet. For India, it represents an opportunity to translate progress into performance and signal its emergence as a serious contender in global relay athletics .
