India and Sweden on Sunday agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership , marking a major upgrade in ties following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg.

PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Sweden, was also conferred the prestigious ‘Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross’ in recognition of his contribution to strengthening India-Sweden relations and his leadership in expanding bilateral engagement.

During the discussions, both leaders reviewed the full spectrum of cooperation and agreed to further deepen ties across trade and investment, technology and innovation, green transition, defence and security, space, emerging technologies, SMEs, research, and people-to-people exchanges . According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the move to upgrade relations reflects the growing depth and ambition of the partnership.

The leaders also noted that bilateral trade reached USD 7.75 billion in 2025 and explored new avenues to expand economic engagement. They discussed strengthening cooperation in line with the India–EU Strategic Partnership and the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) , aiming to generate broader economic benefits for both sides.

Prime Minister Kristersson appreciated India’s progress in digital transformation and artificial intelligence , highlighting India’s growing global role in technology-driven development. He also acknowledged the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora in Sweden in strengthening cultural and economic ties. PM Modi, in response, invited greater Swedish participation in India’s growth journey, particularly in innovation-led sectors.

Both leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments and emphasised the need for reforms in the United Nations and multilateral institutions , agreeing to enhance cooperation in multilateral platforms to address contemporary global challenges.

Crown Princess Victoria also participated in the meeting and conveyed warm greetings from the King and Queen of Sweden. PM Modi expressed gratitude for the hospitality and extended birthday wishes to King Carl XVI Gustaf , who is celebrating his 80th birthday.

Separately, PM Modi met Robert Maersk Uggla , Chairman of Maersk , where discussions focused on expanding investment opportunities in maritime logistics, port infrastructure, green shipping, and skilled mobility . The Prime Minister appreciated Maersk’s long-standing presence in India and encouraged deeper engagement in emerging infrastructure and logistics sectors.

Earlier, PM Modi’s aircraft was escorted by Swedish Air Force jets as it entered Swedish airspace, underscoring the ceremonial significance of the visit. He was received at the airport by PM Kristersson in a special gesture, reflecting the warmth of bilateral relations.

Soon after arriving in Gothenburg, the Prime Minister met members of the Indian diaspora , who welcomed him with cultural performances, including a rendition of the devotional song ‘Vaishnava Jana To’ by Swedish opera singer Charlotta Huldt and a Bharatanatyam performance by students of Lilla Akademien.

A showcase of Bengali cultural heritage was also presented during the reception. PM Modi later remarked that Bengali culture is popular worldwide and “Sweden is no exception,” highlighting the strong cultural connect between the two countries.
