
India-Suriname Ties Rooted in ‘Family’ Bond: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said India views Suriname as “family” rather than a distant partner , highlighting the role of the Indian diaspora, diplomatic relations and economic ties with India as the two nations mark 50 years of diplomatic relations .
Jaishankar, on a multi-day visit to Paramaribo, was received by Suriname’s Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva. The visit includes Joint Commission talks aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, infrastructure, energy, digital development and capacity building.
In an article in The Times of Suriname , he described ties as a “robust, multifaceted engagement” , strengthened through sustained diplomatic outreach and growing economic collaboration. He cited recent high-level exchanges, including visits by former President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to India in 2023 and Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Suriname.
Jaishankar highlighted India’s development support through Lines of Credit projects , including a 161 KV transmission line linking Paranam and Paramaribo, upgrades to power and water infrastructure, construction equipment, and helicopter supply. He also noted India’s contribution of 425 metric tonnes of food aid worth USD 10 million, boosting food security support .
Grant-funded initiatives include flood warning systems, a stadium, and community projects in education, sports and technical training. He is also expected to attend the launch of a passion fruit processing unit to promote value-added industry and self-reliance .
He traced ties to the Lalla Rookh in 1873 , noting the diaspora’s enduring cultural role. Both countries also align on global issues, reflecting growing strategic convergence .
