India successfully tests indigenous MPATGM, boosting Aatmanirbhar Bharat

In a major stride towards self-reliance in defense technology, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the indigenously developed Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) at the K K Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra. The missile demonstrated its top-attack and fire-and-forget capabilities, successfully striking a moving target simulating an enemy armored vehicle.

The MPATGM is a third-generation anti-tank missile designed to be carried and launched by infantry soldiers, offering flexibility in battlefield operations. It incorporates advanced Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker technology , enabling accurate target tracking both during day and night, and features a tandem warhead capable of defeating modern explosive reactive armor. The missile’s all-electric control and fire control systems ensure precision and stability, while its portability allows launch from a tripod or vehicle platform .

Speaking on the successful test, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, its development partners, and the defense industry for this achievement, calling it a significant step toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat . He emphasized that indigenous development of such advanced weapons reduces dependence on foreign suppliers, strengthens India’s defense industry, and enhances the country’s operational readiness.

The MPATGM was developed by DRDO laboratories including the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Research Centre Imarat, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Instruments Research & Development Establishment, and Defence Laboratory Jodhpur. Production partners include Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, which will help scale up manufacturing for the armed forces.

The missile’s fire-and-forget capability allows soldiers to launch it and immediately take cover, as the missile autonomously tracks and engages the target. Its top-attack feature targets the weakest part of armored vehicles, maximizing the probability of a successful strike. These features make MPATGM a critical addition to India’s anti-tank arsenal, significantly boosting battlefield effectiveness.

With this successful test, India reinforces its commitment to self-reliance in defense technologies , in line with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The MPATGM not only strengthens the Indian Army’s anti-armor capabilities but also marks a milestone in indigenous weapons development , showcasing the country’s ability to produce high-tech, advanced missiles domestically.
