India Stun Qatar 3-2 After Dramatic Comeback, Enter Asian Games Volleyball Quarterfinals

India produced a stunning comeback from two sets down to defeat Qatar 3-2 and book their place in the men's volleyball quarterfinals at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday.

In a marathon Pool C contest at Park Arena Komaki, India overcame a difficult start and prevailed 26-28, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 24-22 in a match that lasted two hours and 47 minutes.

The Indian team appeared to be heading towards defeat after Qatar won the opening two sets by narrow margins. However, India fought back strongly to take the third and fourth sets and force a decider.

The fifth set went down to the wire, with India eventually winning 24-22 after saving nine match points. The victory completed India's third straight win and saw the team finish at the top of Pool C, securing a place in the last eight.

India had opened its campaign with a 3-0 victory over Vietnam, winning 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20. The team then defeated Hong Kong China 3-0, with scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-21.

Against Qatar, Jerome Vinith led India's scoring with 27 points, all coming from spikes. Amit Singh Balwan contributed 24 points, including 22 spikes and two blocks, while Joel Benjamin Jebaraj added 17 points through 14 spikes, two blocks and a service point.

The result also keeps alive India's hopes of ending a long wait for a men's volleyball medal at the Asian Games. India last stood on the podium in 1986, when it won bronze. The country had previously won silver in 1962 and bronze in 1958.

All four men's volleyball quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday, October 1, with India now set to continue its knockout-stage campaign after completing an unbeaten run through Pool C.
