India Steps Up 2030 CWG Plans as Amit Shah Reviews 2036 Olympic Bid

India’s ambition to emerge as a major global sporting destination received fresh momentum as Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and discussed the country’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad.

The high-level meeting, held in Ahmedabad on Thursday, was attended by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who also handles the state’s sports portfolio.

Sharing details after the meeting, Shah said the government was firmly committed to strengthening India’s position as a destination capable of hosting major international sporting events. Apart from the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics bid, the review also covered preparations for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games.

The upcoming events could place Ahmedabad at the centre of India’s sporting ambitions over the next decade. The 2030 Commonwealth Games will mark the return of the prestigious multi-sport event to India after two decades. The country had previously hosted the Commonwealth Games for the first time in Delhi in 2010.

Ahmedabad is also being projected as India’s preferred host city for the 2036 Olympic Games. The country is currently in the Continuous Dialogue phase of the International Olympic Committee’s host selection process, with a final decision on the bid not expected before 2029. Sanghavi has been representing Ahmedabad in discussions related to the Olympic bid.

The Home Ministry is expected to play a crucial role in planning security arrangements and coordinating other major logistical requirements for the international events.

Before the Commonwealth Games and a possible Olympic Games, Ahmedabad is set to host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, which will be its first major international multi-sport event of this scale. The competition is expected to bring together nearly 10,000 athletes from around 70 countries.

With the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the 2029 Police and Fire Games and the long-term Olympic bid now part of a broader roadmap, Ahmedabad is preparing for what could become one of the biggest sporting transformations in India’s history.
