India, Seychelles Begin 11th Edition of Joint Exercise ‘Lamitiye’
A tri-service contingent of the Indian Armed Forces has arrived in Seychelles to participate in the 11th edition of Exercise Lamitiye , running from March 9 to 20 at the Seychelles Defence Academy. The Defence Ministry said the exercise aims to enhance synergy and interoperability between the two nations’ forces.
This edition is special as it involves all three services of the Indian military, including personnel from the Assam Regiment, the Indian Navy’s INS Trikand, and the Indian Air Force, with participation of a C‑130 aircraft. The word ‘Lamitiye’ , meaning friendship in Seychellois Creole (Seselwa) , reflects the strong diplomatic and military ties between India and Seychelles.
Exercise Lamitiye is a biennial training event conducted in Seychelles since 2001 . The programme is designed to focus on sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments, peacekeeping cooperation, and tactical drills for neutralising potential threats. It also allows both sides to exchange skills, experiences, and best practices, while showcasing modern equipment and technology.
The 12-day exercise includes field training exercises, combat discussions, case studies, lectures, and demonstrations , culminating in a two-day validation exercise . According to the Defence Ministry, “The exercise will contribute immensely in developing mutual understanding and magnify jointness between the troops of both nations.”
Apart from enhancing operational readiness, the exercise strengthens bilateral military relations and reinforces strategic cooperation in the Indian Ocean region , where Seychelles is located. The collaboration highlights the importance of India‑Seychelles defence ties and demonstrates their commitment to maintaining peace and security in a region that is strategically vital for international shipping and maritime trade, but which can face threats from piracy and geopolitical tensions.
With its comprehensive training format, modern technology integration , and focus on cooperation and friendship , the 11th edition of Exercise Lamitiye marks a significant milestone in the continuing defence partnership between India and Seychelles.
