India sends 2.7 tonnes of life-saving vaccines to Venezuela

India has sent approximately 2.7 tonnes of life-saving vaccines to Venezuela, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Sunday. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X, “Supporting global health. As part of India’s commitment towards the Global South countries, a consignment of approx 2.7 tonnes of life-saving vaccines has been despatched for the people of Venezuela.”

The shipment aims to bolster Venezuela’s struggling public health system and provide relief to thousands amid ongoing economic hardships and medicine shortages. The aid comes amid renewed tensions between Venezuela and the United States, with Washington reinstating sanctions over political disputes, leaving Caracas increasingly isolated. By stepping in, India reinforces its image as a neutral, reliable partner while asserting strategic autonomy and balancing geopolitical interests, especially as China expands influence in Latin America.

This consignment is part of India’s broader humanitarian drive this month, with vaccines also sent to multiple developing nations across Latin America, Africa, and Asia, highlighting its commitment to global health and South-South cooperation.

India and Venezuela share over six decades of diplomatic ties, with resident embassies in both capitals for more than forty years. Venezuela is a key crude oil supplier to India, while India exports pharmaceuticals, machinery, electrical equipment, textiles, and other goods. The countries also collaborate on digital governance solutions following a 2024 MoU. Around 50 Non-Resident Indians and 30 Persons of Indian Origin currently live in Venezuela, reflecting enduring people-to-people connections.
