India on Friday said the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) gets disturbed periodically when Chinese forces deviate from established patrolling patterns, stressing that peace along the border is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the remarks in response to comments by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) director general Shatrujeet Kapur that confrontations with Chinese troops continue at several locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border.

"As we have noted in the past, the situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns," Jaiswal said at his bi-weekly media briefing.

He said both countries continue to use diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve outstanding issues and prevent misunderstandings along the LAC. The two sides have also agreed to discuss ways to improve their understanding of the LAC in appropriate areas for better border management.

Kapur said on Thursday that the ITBP had established drone platoons in all its border units and developed a new 'Strike' training course to prepare personnel for battles similar to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

India-China relations deteriorated sharply following the deadly Galwan clashes in 2020 and the subsequent military standoff, which lasted more than four years.

In October 2024, the two countries reached an agreement on disengagement at Depsang and Demchok, the last two friction points in eastern Ladakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping subsequently held talks in Kazan and Tianjin to improve bilateral ties. Modi also met Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi last month.
