
India remembers Ratan Tata on his 88th birth anniversary
India on Sunday remembered its son, late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata , on his 88th birth anniversary. Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran paid his respects by garlanding the statue of Ratan Tata at Bombay House in Mumbai, honouring the legacy of the former chairman.
Tata Trusts highlighted Tata’s philosophy of philanthropy as strategic and results-driven, addressing healthcare, education, livelihood, women empowerment , and more, with a focus on long-term community transformation. In a post on X, the trust said, “As we commemorate him today, the values he stood for continue to guide and shape our collective purpose.”
Several political leaders also paid tribute. Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “(He) reshaped Indian enterprise with integrity and compassion. From building indigenous industry to selfless philanthropy, he showed that true success lies in service to the nation. His legacy will inspire a self-reliant Bharat.” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remembered him as “a leader who built not just enterprises, but trust, compassion, and faith in Indian excellence globally. His humility and vision remain a guiding light for every aspiring entrepreneur and citizen.” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu described Tata as “a visionary industrialist and compassionate leader” whose integrity, humility, and commitment to society will continue to inspire generations. Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Piyush Goyal and Jyotiraditya Scindia also paid homage, praising his ethical leadership, compassion, and lifelong contributions to philanthropy and nation-building.
Ratan Tata , former chairman of the Tata Group, transformed it into a global business powerhouse in steel, automobiles, software, and telecommunications. After graduating in architecture from Cornell University , he joined the group in 1962 and became chairman in 1991 , introducing reforms and promoting young talent. Under his leadership, Tata Group made key acquisitions like Tetley Tea, VSNL, Corus Steel, Jaguar & Land Rover, and Air India, launched the Tata Nano, and took TCS public. Later, he became a major investor in startups including Paytm, Ola Electric, and Urban Company.
Tata was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including the Padma Bhushan (2000), Padma Vibhushan (2008), Assam Baibhav (2021), Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia (2023), Honorary GBE (2014), Honorary Doctor of Science, IIT Bombay (2008), and Honorary Citizen of Singapore (2008). Known for his humility, integrity, modest lifestyle, and quiet demeanour, he was also a licensed pilot.
The industrialist-philanthropist passed away on October 9, 2024 , at the age of 86. He was chairman of the Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust , two of India’s largest philanthropic organisations.
