India Records Highest-Ever Trademark Filings, Applications Cross 5.5 Lakh
India has recorded its highest-ever number of trademark applications in the 2024–25 financial year , with filings crossing 5.5 lakh , reflecting a sharp rise in brand creation and intellectual property awareness among domestic businesses. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the milestone as unprecedented, noting that such a large volume of trademark applications has been achieved in a single financial year for the first time.
The surge in filings is being seen as a direct outcome of the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen India’s intellectual property ecosystem. By creating robust mechanisms to protect the rights of innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals , the government aims to reinforce the country’s economic foundations. The minister said that safeguarding innovation not only boosts investor confidence but also plays a crucial role in long-term economic growth .
Piyush Goyal said the achievement aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Ideate in India, Innovate in India, Make in India.” He recalled that the Trade Marks Act of 1999 has been providing legal protection to businesses and entrepreneurs for over two decades, and continues to serve as a strong backbone for India’s branding and innovation ecosystem.
Data from the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks shows that the bulk of trademark applications in FY 2024–25 came from domestic applicants , underlining the growing confidence of Indian businesses in protecting their brands. At the same time, the system has also shown improved efficiency, with a significant rise in trademark registrations and case disposals, indicating faster processing and reduced pendency.
Among sectors, pharmaceuticals emerged as the leading contributor to trademark filings, driven by the need to protect medicine brands and prevent counterfeit products. The veterinary products segment and sanitary preparations sector also witnessed record registrations. According to the minister, strong growth in these areas highlights India’s transformation into a hub for innovation , particularly in health and consumer-focused industries .
A major factor behind this growth has been the government’s push towards digitisation. The trademark registration process has been made fully online, removing earlier procedural hurdles and enabling faster, more transparent filings. Reforms such as e-filing, virtual hearings, real-time application tracking , and technology-driven examination tools have significantly improved ease of doing business in the intellectual property space .
Alongside domestic growth, India continues to attract international trademark interest through the Madrid Protocol route , with thousands of foreign brands seeking protection in the Indian market . This reflects India’s expanding consumer base and its growing importance as a global business destination .
A trademark , in simple terms, is a unique name, logo, or symbol that distinguishes a company’s goods or services from others. Registering a trademark gives businesses legal protection against imitation and misuse, strengthens brand identity, and builds consumer trust. The registered trademark symbol (®) often reassures customers about quality and authenticity .
Under Indian law, a trademark registration remains valid for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely every ten years by paying a nominal fee. Generic terms or marks that closely resemble existing brands are not permitted. Trademark owners also have the right to license or transfer their brands, and can approach courts to seek injunctions, penalties, and compensation in cases of infringement .
Overall, the record rise in trademark registrations is being viewed as a strong indicator of an improving business environment in India. It reflects growing awareness of intellectual property rights , increasing innovation across sectors , and a system that is becoming more efficient, digital, and business-friendly .
