India is intensifying efforts to secure recognition for Yogasana as an Olympic sport , positioning it as part of its broader bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and expand the global footprint of yoga as a competitive discipline.

The initiative received a major boost as the government announced the first-ever World Yogasana Championship , to be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, from June 4 to 8 , with participation expected from around 75 countries and more than 500 athletes competing across multiple events.

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said that yoga, which originated in India over 5,000 years ago, has now evolved from a traditional wellness practice into a structured global sporting format. He noted that yogasana is increasingly being adopted worldwide not only for health benefits but also as a competitive sport.

According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, efforts are underway to align yogasana with international sporting frameworks so that it can gain formal recognition under global sporting bodies, a necessary step toward potential inclusion in future Olympic programmes.

Officials said the championship in Ahmedabad is designed to demonstrate the sport’s competitive structure , judging formats , and international participation base. This is expected to strengthen India’s case while engaging global sporting federations and stakeholders.

India’s proposal also aligns with its broader ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games , with the government highlighting yoga as a key element of the country’s soft power and cultural identity. Policymakers argue that yogasana can uniquely bridge tradition and modern sport, offering both physical discipline and competitive scoring systems.

While Olympic inclusion is a long-term process involving multiple stages of recognition and standardisation, the championship marks a significant step in India’s strategic push to position yogasana on the global sporting stage.
