India Post brings next-gen postal experience to campus in Kerala

India Post has inaugurated Kerala’s first-ever Gen-Z themed post office extension counter at CMS College, Kottayam, marking a major step in modernising postal services and reshaping how young people engage with essential public services.

The innovative facility was inaugurated by Shri N.R. Giri , Director of Postal Services (DPS) , Kerala Central Region. Built around the philosophy “Of the students, by the students, for the students” , the space was conceived, planned and co-created by students of CMS College in collaboration with India Post officials, making it a unique blend of youth creativity and public service delivery.

Unlike conventional post offices that focus solely on mail handling and parcel services, this Gen-Z counter has been designed as a multi-purpose campus hub. It offers a nature-inspired, student-friendly environment that encourages productivity, collaboration and relaxation, while still delivering core postal services efficiently.

The centre features a nature-themed seating zone with picnic-style tables, a vertical garden and additional seating crafted from refurbished tyres, highlighting a strong commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. A work-friendly counter ledge with charging points for laptops and mobile devices supports students’ academic and digital needs.

To make the space more engaging, a recreation and relaxation corner has been created with a bookshelf, board games and an indoor reading nook, offering students a quiet space for reflection. The counter is also fully equipped with a modern MPCM booking facility, along with packaging materials and a MyStamp printer, ensuring quick and accessible postal services.

The interiors are adorned with artworks created by students and staff, celebrating India Post, Kerala’s rich heritage, the ethos of CMS College, and the cultural legacy of Kottayam widely known as the “Land of Letters” due to its long-standing tradition of literacy, publishing, and education. The city has historically been a hub for printing presses, newspapers, books, and scholarly activity, earning its reputation as a centre of knowledge and written communication.

Officials said the Gen-Z styled extension counter is not merely a functional service point but a workplace, meeting space, creative hub, relaxation zone and community corner. By blending indoor and outdoor elements and aligning with the college’s nature-friendly campus environment, the initiative represents India Post’s efforts to carry its legacy into the future while adapting to the expectations of the next generation.
