India observed World Environment Day on Friday with a resounding national commitment to environmental protection, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the chorus of voices calling for sustainable development and collective action to safeguard the planet's future.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister extended his greetings and applauded all those passionate about environmental conservation, describing the day as an occasion to reaffirm the nation's commitment to protecting the environment and pursuing growth that is sustainable. Modi also shared a video message highlighting the importance of environmental protection and conservation, stressing that the Earth is revered as a mother in India and that its protection, preservation, and development are the responsibility of every generation.

The Prime Minister warned that humanity's ongoing conflict with nature has already led to several disasters and cautioned that continued mistakes could create even greater challenges ahead, urging that protecting and preserving the Earth is a collective responsibility.

Pointing to a decade of decisive governance, Modi highlighted India's pride in its biological diversity, noting that the country's diverse ecosystems support countless species and livelihoods. He specifically cited conservation efforts for ecological restoration and credited the government's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative with contributing significantly to adding nearly 1.19 lakh hectares of forest every year. Reaffirming India's environmental vision, he said the country would continue working toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable planet, guided by the principle of 'One Earth, One Family and One Future' and the spirit of Mission LiFE .

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings, noting that Prime Minister Modi had made environmental protection a global movement by building the world's third-largest renewable energy capacity, launching the National Green Hydrogen Mission, and powering millions of homes through solar energy.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav offered a sweeping account of the government's 12-year environmental roadmap. He highlighted the expansion of globally recognised Ramsar wetland sites from just 24 in 2014 to a landmark 100, and the scaling up of dedicated tiger reserves from 48 to 58. He also detailed how an amendment to the Biodiversity Act is paving the way for a localised biodiversity register in every Indian village to protect native flora and fauna, and underlined the launch of the MISHTI Mangrove project to combat coastal erosion alongside the Aravalli conservation programme . Yadav also championed Mission LiFE's seven pillars, saving water, food, and energy, banning single-use plastics, solid waste management, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and building a circular economy, as the bridge between national policy and daily citizen action.

Across the country, institutions and communities joined the observance in full spirit. SRM Institute of Science and Technology organised a week-long celebration under this year's theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," featuring awareness workshops, tree plantation drives, climate action debates, poster presentations, and waste-to-wealth workshops. In Rajasthan, NCC cadets of Smt. Jamuna Mishra Academy in Pilani led a tree plantation drive, with participants taking a solemn oath to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

World Environment Day 2026 is being hosted by Azerbaijan , reinforcing the celebration's status as one of the most extensive global platforms for environmental causes. Established by UNEP in 1973, the occasion annually galvanises millions worldwide. This year's India's participation was notable not just in words but in the breadth of action, from government boardrooms to village schoolyards, reflecting the scale of the nation's environmental ambition.
