India’s Blue Colts produced a commanding performance to crush Pakistan 3-0 and secure a place in the semifinals of the SAFF U-20 Championship at the National Football Stadium on Thursday.

The SAFF U20 Championship , organised by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), is the premier youth football tournament in the region, featuring the best under-20 teams from South Asia , including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. The tournament serves as a platform for young talent to shine and often acts as a stepping stone to the senior national team .

India has historically been a dominant force in South Asian football , frequently clinching SAFF titles at both senior and youth levels. Their performance in youth tournaments is closely watched, as it reflects the future of Indian football. Beating Pakistan, India’s longstanding regional rival , carries extra weight, both for morale and bragging rights, making this 3-0 victory a major statement.

The match began with intensity. In just the third minute , Gurnaj Singh delivered a perfectly weighted through ball into the box. Vishal Yadav , the third youngest player to debut in the Indian Super League for Punjab FC, rose to the occasion, controlling the pass under pressure and slotting it past the Pakistan goalkeeper for an early 1-0 lead .

Pakistan fought hard in the first half, creating several opportunities, but Indian goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam and a disciplined defense maintained a clean sheet .

The second half belonged to Omang Dodum , the only returning member from India’s previous SAFF U20 title-winning squad . Dodum first doubled India’s lead in the 64th minute , heading home a precise first-time effort from a cross-field diagonal pass by substitute Rishi . In the 88th minute , he converted a penalty won after teammate Prashan Jajo was fouled in the box, completing his brace and earning the Player of the Match award .

With this emphatic win, India comfortably advanced to the knockout stages , leaving Pakistan eliminated. The Blue Colts will next face Bangladesh on March 28 to conclude their group-stage campaign, aiming to carry forward their momentum into the semifinals .

India will next face Bangladesh on March 28 in their final group-stage match. The outcome will determine whether the Blue Colts finish as Group B winners or runners-up, which will decide their semifinal opponent from Group A , comprising Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, in the knockout stage scheduled for April 1 in Malé.

This result not only reinforces India’s dominance in South Asian youth football but also sends a strong signal about the rising talent in Indian football, with players like Dodum and Yadav showing they could be the stars of tomorrow.
