India outplay England in mixed disability T20 opener at Greater Noida

India opened their five match mixed disability T20 series against England with a seven wicket win at Greater Noida on Thursday, a result that also underlined the growing structure behind disability cricket at the international level.

Mixed disability cricket brings together players with different physical, sensory, and learning disabilities in the same team, focusing on inclusion while maintaining competitive balance. Players are selected through a classification system that assesses functional ability rather than disability severity alone, ensuring fairness and preventing any one side from gaining an advantage. The format allows cricketers from physical impairment, hearing impairment, learning disability, and visual impairment categories to compete together under clearly defined guidelines.

The format has gained momentum over the past decade, with England playing a leading role in formalising mixed disability cricket and promoting bilateral series. Such matches are usually staged at recognised international venues and integrated into official cricket calendars. For example, recent mixed disability IT20 matches between England and India were held at grounds including Lord’s Cricket Ground, Taunton, Wormsley, Worcester and Bristol, with live streaming provided via England and Wales Cricket Board digital platforms and, in India, on SonyLIV.

In the opening match, England posted 173 for five after being put in to bat. Captain Callum Flynn provided early momentum with 26 off 16 balls, while Lian O’Brien anchored the innings with a composed 55 off 41 deliveries. Wicketkeeper batter Angus Grant Brown added late impetus with a fluent 53 off 34 balls.

India’s bowlers, particularly Akash Singh and Vivek Kumar , struck at key moments to keep the target within reach. The hosts then paced the chase well, reaching the target in 18.5 overs to secure a seven wicket victory and a 1 to 0 lead in the series.
