India Open Chess Olympiad Campaign With 3-1 Win Over Thailand

India's defending champions made a winning start to the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand on Wednesday, with the men's team beating Thailand 3-1 and the women's team registering a commanding 4-0 win over the Dominican Republic. Three Indian men won their games, while Arjun Erigaisi's unexpected loss denied the team a perfect opening round.

Nihal Sarin was the first Indian to register a victory, defeating Thanadon Kulpruethanon. World champion D Gukesh followed with an impressive attacking display against Faris Rashid Alriyami, while Vidit Gujrathi completed India's three wins with a comfortable victory over Tupfah Khumnorkaew.

The only setback came on the second board, where Arjun Erigaisi lost to Thailand's 20-year-old Prin Laohawirapap. Playing with White, Arjun held a stronger position for much of the game but missed a major opportunity in the later stages of the middlegame. The contest extended into the sixth hour, with Laohawirapap maintaining his composure despite running short of time.

Arjun's final mistake allowed his opponent to create a decisive mating threat, leaving the Indian no option but to resign. The result denied India what could have been a 4-0 victory. Highly rated Levon Aronian of the United States also dropped points on the opening day after being held to a draw by Iraq's Ali Ehsan Aryan.

The Indian women's team, meanwhile, produced a perfect start. Koneru Humpy defeated Franchesca Ramirez Luzon, while R Vaishali overcame Miguelina De La Rosa Martinez. Vantika Agrawal had a more difficult encounter against Mary Loly Gonzalez Peguero, but an error by her opponent changed the game in India's favour.

The resulting rook-and-minor-piece endgame eventually favoured Vantika, whose advanced passed pawn proved decisive. B Savitha Shri, making her Olympic debut, also began her campaign with a victory over Karla Mya Nunez Diaz to complete India's 4-0 sweep.

India's campaign carries additional significance after the country won gold in both the Open and Women's sections at the 2024 Budapest Olympiad. The Open team went unbeaten in Budapest, winning 10 matches and drawing one, while Gukesh scored nine points from 10 games and claimed individual gold.

India's current Open squad comprises R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi, with an average rating of 2735, making it the second seed behind the United States. The women's squad features Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali, Vantika and Savitha Shri, with India entering as the top seed at an average rating of 2466.

The Samarkand Olympiad is the largest edition in history, featuring 400 teams - 208 in the Open section and 192 in the Women's section - surpassing the previous record of 380 teams in Budapest.

The tournament runs from September 15 to 27 and features 11 rounds. Each team can register five players but field four in each round, while a match win earns two match points. With the competition only beginning, India has secured positive opening results, but Arjun's defeat also showed how a single board can influence the margin of victory in a team event.
