India and Myanmar have completed their first-ever joint tri-services disaster relief exercise, ‘Rahat Mitra’, in Chennai, marking a significant step towards strengthening humanitarian cooperation and emergency response coordination between the two neighbouring countries.

The two-day bilateral exercise, conducted under the aegis of the Indian Navy, brought together more than 300 personnel from the armed forces of both nations. Centred on the theme “Together for Humanity, Stronger through Partnership”, the exercise focused on improving coordination, operational compatibility and mutual trust during natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies.

The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force participated in the exercise, showcasing their capabilities in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. The Army demonstrated specialised rescue and relief techniques through its Flood Relief Columns and Engineer Task Forces, highlighting how armed forces can support civilian authorities and affected communities during major calamities.

The demonstrations included critical rescue operations, dewatering techniques to remove accumulated floodwater and bridge-laying operations to restore connectivity in disaster-hit areas. These capabilities are particularly important during floods and other emergencies, when damaged infrastructure and disrupted transport networks can delay relief efforts.

Beyond the practical demonstrations, the exercise provided an opportunity for military personnel from both countries to exchange operational experience, share best practices and improve procedures for conducting coordinated relief operations.

The maiden edition of ‘Rahat Mitra’ also reflects India's broader regional engagement under its Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR vision — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.

The exercise highlights the importance of cooperation between neighbouring countries in responding to natural disasters, where timely assistance, coordinated rescue efforts and effective communication can prove crucial in saving lives and restoring essential services.
