India Moves to Secure Oil, Gas Supply for Mauritius Amid West Asia Crisis, Says Jaishankar

India is set to finalise a major government-to-government agreement to supply oil and gas to Mauritius, strengthening its energy security amid ongoing disruptions in global markets triggered by the West Asia conflict. The announcement was made by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit for the 9th Indian Ocean Conference.

The key highlight of the agreement is a long-term, government-to-government energy supply arrangement aimed at ensuring stable and uninterrupted fuel access for Mauritius. The pact is designed to reduce the island nation’s vulnerability to global price shocks and supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, particularly those linked to the conflict involving Iran and instability around the Strait of Hormuz.

The deal also reflects India’s growing role as a dependable energy partner in the Indian Ocean region , offering not just commercial supply but strategic assurance. It comes at a time when global shipping routes remain under pressure and oil markets continue to experience volatility due to the fragile geopolitical situation.

India–Mauritius ties, meanwhile, have evolved into a broad and structured Enhanced Strategic Partnership , following the elevation announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Cooperation now spans key sectors such as maritime security, infrastructure development, health, education, and capacity building, reflecting deepening trust between the two nations.

The partnership is also expanding into clean and renewable energy , with India supporting projects like Mauritius’ first floating solar power plant and the 8 MW solar facility at Henrietta. Collaboration through the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance further strengthens shared goals for sustainable energy transition and carbon reduction.

Overall, the proposed energy agreement underscores India’s broader diplomatic strategy of reinforcing regional stability and energy resilience.
