India marks record-breaking year in clean energy in 2025

India marked a historic year in its clean energy journey in 2025 , with non-fossil fuel installed capacity reaching 266.78 gigawatts , reflecting a 22.6 percent increase over 2024 . Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi , announced that during the year, India added 49.12 GW of new non-fossil capacity , the highest annual addition recorded so far . He said the achievement reflects decisive policy direction, long-term vision, and sustained implementation under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi , strengthening India’s path towards energy security, climate responsibility, and a self-reliant green economy .

Solar power led the expansion in 2025 , with installed capacity rising from 97.86 GW in 2024 to 135.81 GW , marking a 38.8 percent growth . Wind energy also witnessed steady progress, increasing from 48.16 GW to 54.51 GW , contributing significantly to India’s renewable energy growth. Other renewable sources played an important role in diversifying the energy mix, with bioenergy reaching 11.61 GW , including 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy off-grid projects , and small hydro power capacity growing to 5.16 GW to support decentralized and region-specific energy development. Large hydro power stood at 50.91 GW, including 7,175.6 MW of pumped storage , enhancing grid stability and facilitating the integration of variable renewable energy.

India’s clean energy progress has been remarkable over the past decade . From an installed renewable capacity of approximately 76.4 GW in 2014 , the country expanded to around 186.5 GW by 2023 , and further to 217.62 GW in 2024 . The rapid additions in 2025 bring India closer to its ambitious national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 . Analysts estimate that India could source between 50 and 62 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources by the end of the decade if current momentum continues. While installed capacity from non-fossil sources now constitutes about 50 percent of India’s total electricity capacity , actual electricity generation from these sources accounts for around 27 percent , as fossil fuels remain dominant in production. On total final energy consumption, the share of renewables is still below 15 percent , highlighting the ongoing challenge of transitioning the broader energy system.

In a global context , India’s clean energy growth places it among the leading countries in renewable capacity expansion . China , the world’s largest renewable energy installer, supplies over 35 percent of its electricity from renewables and aims to achieve more than 1,200 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2030, although coal still accounts for approximately 60 percent of its electricity generation. The United States generates roughly 22 to 23 percent of its electricity from renewables and continues to pursue ambitious clean energy expansion policies. Europe , meanwhile, derives about 47 percent of its electricity from renewable sources and has set a binding target of at least 42.5 percent renewable energy in total energy consumption by 2030, with some member states already producing more than half of their energy from renewables .

Shri Joshi emphasized that India’s record-breaking 2025 performance underscores strong policy support, state and stakeholder collaboration, and investment confidence . The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy will continue working closely with states and industry to accelerate deployment, strengthen grid integration, and ensure the achievement of India’s 2030 target . With these efforts, India is not only advancing its domestic energy security but also positioning itself as a global leader in the transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy .
