The Centre is likely to put on hold the rollout of E25 petrol , a fuel blend containing 25 per cent ethanol and 75 per cent petrol , following growing public concerns over the nationwide implementation of E20 petrol , according to reports. The move comes after motorists raised complaints about reduced fuel efficiency and compatibility issues in older vehicles, prompting the government to reassess its next phase of ethanol blending.

India achieved its ambitious target of making E20 petrol the standard fuel across the country by April 2026 , well ahead of its original 2030 deadline. The programme has been a key part of the government's strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, cut carbon emissions and support domestic farmers through higher ethanol production. According to official figures, the ethanol blending programme has saved around ₹1.55 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014-15 while generating about ₹1.6 lakh crore in income for farmers . It has also helped lower carbon monoxide emissions by an estimated 40-50 per cent .

Despite these gains, the transition has triggered criticism from sections of consumers. Studies indicate that older vehicles can experience a 2-6 per cent drop in fuel mileage because ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol. Environmental experts have also highlighted concerns over the high water consumption required for ethanol production , while some vehicle owners have reported worries about compatibility with pre-2023 models. Recent industry assessments have further suggested that older vehicles designed for lower ethanol blends may require additional evaluation before moving to higher blends.

According to reports, a high-level government meeting recently reviewed the situation and discussed a more gradual approach to ethanol blending. Officials are said to be considering allowing fuel stations to offer multiple options , including E20, E25 and pure petrol , enabling consumers, particularly owners of older vehicles, to choose fuel best suited to their engines. The proposal is also intended to provide automakers with additional time to prepare vehicles for higher ethanol blends while maintaining the country's long-term biofuel objectives.

While the government continues to support ethanol blending as a crucial step towards energy security and cleaner transportation , the reported pause on E25 suggests that future expansion is likely to be phased and evidence-based , balancing environmental goals with consumer confidence and vehicle compatibility.
