India junior women’s hockey team beats Wales 3‑1 in qualification round

The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team recorded a commanding 3‑1 victory over Wales in their 9/16 qualification match at the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup 2025 at the Centro Deportivo de Hockey Cesped, Estadio Nacional, Santiago.

scored for India, while Eloise Moat netted Wales’ lone goal.

India started aggressively, earning a penalty corner within the first 30 seconds and keeping constant pressure on the Welsh defense. Wales had an early chance with a penalty stroke, but goalkeeper Nidhi made a sharp save to keep the scores level. India finally broke the deadlock in the first quarter when Hina Bano converted a tap-in after neat buildup from Sakshi Rana.

The Indian attack continued in the second quarter. After Sakshi Rana’s initial attempt was blocked, Sunelita Toppo tapped in from close range to make it 2‑0. By halftime, India had made 14 circle penetrations and deservedly led.

Early in the second half, Ishika extended India’s lead to 3‑0 after capitalizing on a rebound from the Welsh goalkeeper. Under coach Jyoti Singh , India controlled the game, pressing high, stretching the Welsh defense, and maintaining a disciplined backline.

Wales pulled one back in the final quarter through Eloise Moat, but it remained a consolation as India held firm to secure a solid 3‑1 win.

With this win, India remains in contention for a top‑10 finish in the tournament rankings. The 2025 FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup features 24 teams competing for the title. After the pool stage and this 9th-16th place qualification match, India has played several games, winning their pool matches and now this classification match, keeping their hopes alive for a strong finish.

Among the participating teams, traditional powerhouses such as the Netherlands and Germany are among the favourites to win the tournament. India’s next opponent, Uruguay, is part of the 24‑team field but historically has not been considered a top contender, giving India a good chance to maintain momentum and improve their ranking.
