India Joins 24 Nations in 6G Push, Targets Bigger Role in Global Standards

India’s endorsement of the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security marks a significant shift in the country’s telecom ambitions from adopting technologies developed elsewhere to helping shape the standards, technologies and security architecture of the next wireless era. Announced on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the move places India among 24 other like-minded governments committed to building open, interoperable, secure and resilient next-generation networks. More importantly, it comes at a time when the global 6G race is already moving from research concepts towards formal standardisation, even though commercial deployment is still years away.

Why 6G Is More Than Faster Internet

The next generation of wireless technology is increasingly being designed as an intelligent infrastructure rather than simply a faster version of 5G. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has identified six major 6G usage scenarios: immersive communications, hyper-reliable and low-latency communications, massive communications, ubiquitous connectivity, AI and communications, and integrated sensing and communications. This means future networks could connect not just people and devices, but also machines, autonomous systems and intelligent applications.

The potential impact stretches across manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, transport, energy, logistics and defence. Integrated sensing could allow networks to assist with positioning and environmental awareness, while AI could increasingly help networks optimise resources, detect anomalies and manage operations. In this sense, 6G could become an important infrastructure layer for the AI economy, connecting digital intelligence with the physical world.

India’s Race to Become a Standard-Setter

India’s stated ambition to contribute 10 per cent of global 6G standards and patents gives the announcement its deeper strategic significance. The government said earlier this year that India had already contributed around 4,000 6G patents, while also securing international acceptance for its proposal on ubiquitous connectivity through global standards forums.

Patents and standards matter because the telecom industry is built around globally agreed technical specifications that allow equipment, networks and devices from different manufacturers to work together. Technologies that become part of international standards can create significant commercial and intellectual-property opportunities. India therefore does not simply want to deploy 6G quickly; it wants Indian research and technology to become part of the architecture adopted by the world.

The Global Race Has Already Started

Although consumers are unlikely to experience mainstream 6G for several more years, the crucial decisions are being made now. The ITU has established the IMT-2030 framework and moved through technical performance requirements and evaluation guidelines. Candidate radio-interface technologies are expected to enter the formal evaluation process from 2027, while the broader international objective is to finalise globally harmonised 6G standards around 2030. At the same time, the 3GPP standards process is moving towards the first normative 6G specifications through Release 21.

This makes the present period strategically important for India. By the time commercial 6G networks become widespread, many decisions on spectrum, architecture, security, interoperability and intellectual property will already have been settled.

Building an Indian 6G Ecosystem

India’s latest international commitment builds on the Bharat 6G Vision and the Bharat 6G Alliance, alongside the country’s indigenous 4G and 5G technology stack. The Alliance has grown from an initial 14 institutions to 85 members, bringing together telecom operators, equipment makers, startups, research organisations and academia. Its working groups cover areas including spectrum, devices, technology and components, alliances, sustainability, outreach and 6G use cases.

The research ecosystem is also receiving wider policy support. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation is designed to mobilise ₹50,000 crore during 2023-28, while the government’s ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Scheme seeks to encourage long-term investment in critical and emerging technologies. For 6G, the objective is to create a pipeline connecting research laboratories and universities with startups, manufacturers and global markets.

Terahertz, AI and the Next Technology Frontier

India is also investing in the underlying technologies that could support future networks. A 6G terahertz testbed has been approved at SAMEER in Kolkata through a consortium involving IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Patna. At India Mobile Congress 2025, a high-data-rate line-of-sight link achieved 6,400 megabytes per second over a 270-gigahertz wireless link.

Such experiments are important because 6G is expected to explore much higher-frequency bands, while also integrating AI, advanced computing and sensing capabilities. The combination could eventually support intelligent factories, autonomous transport, sophisticated positioning and immersive digital experiences. Yet these possibilities remain technological goals rather than immediate consumer promises.

Security Is Becoming Central to the 6G Race

The emphasis on security and resilience in the new Call to Action reflects another major change. Future telecommunications networks will underpin increasingly sensitive systems, from financial and healthcare infrastructure to energy, transport and defence. A weakness in telecom infrastructure could therefore become a vulnerability for the wider economy.

The initiative calls for cooperation on cybersecurity risks, supply-chain vulnerabilities, secure 5G and 6G deployment and greater transparency around technology dependencies. It also recognises that resilient networks require collaboration between governments, industry and academia. For India, this fits closely with the objective of technological self-reliance under Atmanirbhar Bharat, while retaining access to global cooperation.

What Happens Next

The Call to Action sets out a 1-3-6-12 month roadmap. Within one month, participating governments are expected to identify expert 6G contacts, coordinating agencies and relevant industry and academic stakeholders. Within three months, they are to map the emerging secure and interoperable 6G landscape, identify barriers and assess resources required for competitiveness. Within six months, they are expected to develop strategies for secure, resilient, sustainable and innovative supply chains. Within 12 months, governments will meet in 2027 to review progress, exchange lessons and establish priorities for the following year.

For India, the Department of Telecommunications will coordinate these efforts with government agencies, industry, academia and other stakeholders. The initiative does not restrict India’s independent positions in standards bodies or spectrum forums, allowing New Delhi to combine international cooperation with its own technological priorities.

The Real Test for India

India’s 6G ambition ultimately depends on whether it can convert research into patents, patents into standards, standards into products and products into globally competitive companies. The country has built important foundations through its indigenous telecom stack, Bharat 6G Alliance, research programmes, spectrum planning and emerging 6G test infrastructure. But competition will be intense, with the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Europe also seeking influence over the technology and standards of the post-5G world.

That is why India’s latest move matters. The country is not waiting for 6G to arrive before deciding what role it wants to play. It is entering the race while the rules are still being written.

The ultimate measure of success will therefore not be whether India is among the first countries to launch a 6G service. It will be whether Indian technology, intellectual property, standards and companies help define what 6G becomes.
