India, Israel sign MoU to deepen defence cooperation

India and Israel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand bilateral defence cooperation, marking another milestone in their growing strategic partnership. The agreement was formalized during the 17th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on defence cooperation held in Tel Aviv, co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Major General Amir Baram, Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defence.

The MoU aims to enhance collaboration in key areas such as defence technology, joint research and development, intelligence sharing, and advanced weapon systems. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building a long-term partnership focused on innovation and co-production, reflecting the “Make in India, Make for the World” vision.

According to official sources, the discussions also covered future joint projects in the domains of cyber security, unmanned aerial systems, and artificial intelligence-based warfare - sectors where Israel has strong technological expertise.

Impact on India’s global relations

The strengthening of India-Israel defence ties comes at a time when global security dynamics are rapidly evolving. Analysts say the agreement reinforces India’s strategic autonomy, allowing it to diversify defence partnerships beyond traditional allies like Russia and the United States.

While India continues to maintain defence and energy cooperation with Arab nations, New Delhi’s growing defence collaboration with Israel underscores its pragmatic foreign policy - balancing relations based on mutual interests rather than ideological alignments. Experts believe that Arab nations, many of whom have normalized ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords, are less likely to view the India-Israel partnership as a threat.

However, the move also signals India’s intent to position itself as a key player in West Asian geopolitics. By deepening cooperation with Israel - a leader in advanced military technology - India can enhance its defence preparedness, boost indigenization, and increase its global leverage in security and innovation partnerships.
