India Is Entering a New Era of Military Aviation, Bharat Forge's Latest Deal Could Change Everything

India has taken another significant step towards strengthening indigenous aerospace and defence manufacturing, with Bharat Forge signing a strategic partnership with French-Canadian company Flying Whales to jointly develop and manufacture advanced heavy-lift airships for the country's strategic and defence requirements.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 in the United Kingdom by Guru Biswal, CEO of Aerospace at Bharat Forge, and Sébastien Bougon, President of Flying Whales. The collaboration is aimed at creating a complete ecosystem for manufacturing, integrating and producing heavy-lift airships in India, in line with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

At the heart of the partnership is the LCA60T, Flying Whales' next-generation heavy-lift airship capable of carrying up to 60 tonnes of cargo. The aircraft features vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, hybrid-electric propulsion, and requires minimal ground infrastructure, making it suitable for operations in remote, mountainous and difficult terrains where conventional transport often faces limitations.

The companies plan to explore multiple defence applications for the platform, including supplying forward operating bases, transporting oversized military equipment and critical supplies, conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, supporting communication relay systems, carrying out humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, and enabling rapid deployment of personnel and equipment in border regions.

Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, said heavy-lift airships have the potential to redefine military logistics and strategic mobility. He said the partnership combines Flying Whales' pioneering technology with Bharat Forge's engineering expertise, placing India among a select group of nations capable of designing, manufacturing and operating advanced heavy-lift airships while creating sovereign capabilities in a strategically important aerospace segment.

Flying Whales Services CEO Tanguy Lestienne said the LCA60T was designed to reach some of the world's most remote and demanding locations, making India an ideal partner given its vast geography and diverse operational requirements. He expressed confidence that the collaboration would lay the foundation for a long-term airship industry capable of serving India as well as international markets.

Apart from strengthening defence capabilities, the proposed localisation programme is expected to generate high-skilled employment, develop an advanced domestic supply chain and create future export opportunities. Industry experts believe the partnership could further cement India's position as an emerging global hub for aerospace manufacturing while expanding its capabilities in next-generation defence technologies.
