India’s economic story continues to stand out on the global stage, with the United Nations projecting a 6.4 per cent growth rate for 2026 , followed by a further rise to 6.6 per cent in 2027 . At a time when global uncertainties and trade tensions are reshaping economies, India appears to be navigating the turbulence with cautious resilience.

According to a report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, India was a major force behind regional growth, helping South and South-West Asia expand by 5.4 per cent in 2025 . The country itself posted a strong 7.4 per cent growth last year , driven largely by robust rural consumption, tax adjustments under GST, and a push in exports before US tariff changes .

However, the momentum wasn’t entirely smooth. Economic activity slowed in the latter half of 2025 after exports to the United States dropped sharply by 25 per cent , following steep tariff hikes. Despite this, the services sector remained a reliable pillar, cushioning the broader economy.

Inflation, often a concern in fast-growing economies, is expected to stay relatively stable at 4.4 per cent in 2026 and 4.3 per cent in 2027 , indicating a controlled price environment.

Beyond growth numbers, the report highlights deeper structural shifts. India continues to attract significant greenfield foreign investments, standing among top destinations alongside countries like Australia and South Korea. At the same time, remittances remain a lifeline , supporting millions of households, especially for essential expenses such as healthcare.

Yet, challenges loom. A new 1 per cent tax on remittances by the United States , introduced in 2026, could impact India, the world’s largest recipient of remittances, which stood at USD 137 billion in 2024 .

On the brighter side, India is steadily carving its space in the global green economy . With around 1.3 million green jobs , the country is emerging as a key player in renewable energy and sustainable industries. Government initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme are accelerating this transition, boosting domestic manufacturing in sectors such as solar energy, batteries, and green hydrogen.
