India Gets High Resolution Land Atlas as ISRO Finishes Pan India Mapping

The Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO has achieved a major milestone by completing high resolution land use and land cover mapping for the entire country, in collaboration with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj . The initiative is aimed at strengthening decentralised planning and improving governance at the grassroots level.

Announced on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day , ISRO said the nationwide dataset has been created at a 1:10,000 scale , offering highly detailed information on land distribution across India. It captures key categories such as agriculture, forests, water bodies, settlements, and other land use patterns with precision.

The space agency also confirmed that the dataset has been shared with government organisations and integrated into the Grammanchitra web portal , which supports planning for gram panchayats across the country. The platform is designed to help local bodies make data driven development decisions using scientific inputs.

Officials said this integration of geospatial technology with rural governance marks an important shift in how village level planning is carried out. It is expected to improve the preparation of gram panchayat development plans , enabling better resource allocation and more focused infrastructure growth.

By bringing together space technology and local administration, the initiative aims to make rural development more transparent, efficient, and evidence based . It also reflects the growing role of satellite data in everyday governance systems.

With the completion of this nationwide mapping exercise, India now has one of the most comprehensive land information systems available for public planning, marking a significant step forward in tech driven rural development .
