External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday and Tuesday reiterated that India favours peace and a return to dialogue and diplomacy amid the escalating conflict in West Asia, while emphasising that the safety of Indian citizens and the country’s energy security remain top priorities.

Making a suo motu statement in the Rajya Sabha on Monday morning, Jaishankar said India advocates de‑escalation and restraint and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of civilians in the region. “The well‑being and security of the Indian community in the region remain a key concern for the government. We will continue to work with the governments in the region towards the end,” he said, adding that India’s national interests, including energy security and trade flows, will always remain paramount .

Later in the Lok Sabha , Jaishankar updated members amid opposition MPs demanding a full-fledged discussion on the West Asia situation. He said developments in the region are of deep concern , noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to closely monitor events and that relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure effective responses.

Highlighting the three guiding factors of India’s approach, Jaishankar said the government is in favour of peace , urges a return to dialogue and diplomacy , and advocates de-escalation, restraint, and the safety of civilians . “It is also imperative that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries is respected,” he added.

He pointed out that the conflict has intensified, causing a significant deterioration in the security situation . India has already facilitated the return of over 52,000 Indians following the partial reopening of airspace, and the government continues to monitor developments closely to respond swiftly if needed.

Jaishankar also addressed the impact on global energy markets , noting that New Delhi remains committed to ensuring energy security and safeguarding consumer interests , while supporting the efforts of Indian enterprises amid market volatility.
