India’s SAFF Men’s U20 Championship dream ended in heartbreak as Bangladesh defeated the defending champions 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout after a goalless final at the National Stadium in Male on Friday.

Both teams fought fiercely through 90 minutes of regulation time , but neither side could break the deadlock despite several promising chances. With the scoreboard still reading 0-0 , the title had to be decided through penalties, where Bangladesh kept their composure to secure their second SAFF U20 Championship crown .

India, who entered the final as tournament favourites , had looked strong throughout the competition. However, the decisive moments in the shootout tilted the contest. Rishi Singh Ningthoukhongjam saw his penalty saved , while Omang Dodum missed his attempt , putting India on the back foot. Samuel Raksam converted his spot kick to keep India in contention, but Bangladesh’s Ronan Sullivan calmly netted the decisive penalty , sealing the victory and breaking Indian hearts.

The result also marked India’s second defeat to Bangladesh in the tournament , after the two sides had earlier played out a 1-1 draw in the group stage .

India’s journey to the final had been impressive. The young Indian side opened their campaign with a dominant 3-0 win over arch-rivals Pakistan , followed by the draw with Bangladesh. They then produced one of the most commanding performances of the tournament in the semifinals, thrashing Bhutan 5-0 to storm into the title clash.

Bangladesh too enjoyed a strong run. Placed in Group B alongside India and Pakistan , they began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Pakistan before drawing with India. In the semifinals, Bangladesh edged past Nepal 1-0 , setting up the much-anticipated final against the defending champions.

Although India’s young squad displayed skill, discipline and attacking flair throughout the tournament, the final proved to be a test of nerves , where Bangladesh held firm to lift the trophy.

For India, the defeat will be painful, but the tournament also showcased promising young talent that could shape the future of Indian football.
