India Face Bhutan in SAFF U20 Semi-final Today
Defending champions India will look to rise to the occasion when they take on Bhutan in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U20 Championship semi-final at the Dasharath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu today.
The other semi-final will be played between Nepal and Bangladesh .
India head into the knockout stage with confidence after finishing as Group B toppers, registering a 3-0 win over Pakistan and a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh. The Blue Colts made good use of the three-day break following the group stage to recover physically and reset mentally. The squad also spent time together off the field, helping strengthen team bonding ahead of the crucial clash. The positive atmosphere was evident in training, where players showed sharpness and renewed focus.
India head coach Mahesh Gawli praised his players for their effort and composure under pressure. “The boys have been playing well and handling pressure effectively. We didn’t get much time to prepare before the tournament, but they are giving their 100 per cent. I am happy with the way we have performed so far,” he said.
Despite the encouraging results, the coach stressed the need for improvement in key areas. India created several opportunities in their matches but will aim to be more clinical in front of goal , while also maintaining better defensive concentration. “Nothing is easy. We created chances and needed to convert more. We also have to stay more focused while defending,” Gawli added.
Bhutan, on the other hand, have shown resilience in Group A. After losing to Nepal, they played out a goalless draw against hosts Maldives before sealing a semi-final spot with a dramatic injury-time winner against Sri Lanka. Their ability to fight till the end makes them a dangerous opponent, and India are expected to approach the contest with caution.
The match could also see a key battle in attack. India’s Vishal Yadav and Omang Dodum have scored two goals each, while Bhutan’s Dhendup Gyeltshen has also netted twice, making him a major threat. With no extra time scheduled, the semi-final will go directly to penalties if scores remain level after regulation time, adding further intensity to the contest.
India will aim to combine composure with attacking efficiency as they seek a place in the final and continue their title defence.
