Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has indicated that India is actively pushing for the return of Formula 1 racing in 2027 , raising hopes of reviving one of the country’s biggest international motorsport events. He said at least three companies have shown interest in operating the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida , which is being considered as the potential venue for the comeback race. Reports suggest that major corporate groups, including the Adani Group , are among those exploring interest in acquiring or managing the circuit’s assets, though no deal has been finalised. Mandaviya said an F1 race could return in 2027, but the plan remains under discussion and is yet to be confirmed by Formula 1 or its commercial rights holder Liberty Media.

Mandaviya stated that there will be an F1 race in India in 2027 and suggested that the first race could be held at the Buddh International Circuit , though the proposal is still in the discussion stage. The announcement, however, has not yet been officially confirmed by Formula 1 management or its commercial rights holder Liberty Media.

India last hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2013 , when Sebastian Vettel won the final Indian Grand Prix. The race was held at the same Greater Noida circuit but was discontinued after just three editions (2011–2013). The event was dropped mainly due to taxation issues, regulatory hurdles, and financial stress faced by the promoter.

Since then, India has been absent from the F1 calendar for over 13 years , even as the sport expanded globally and added new races across Asia and the Middle East.

The proposed return in 2027 is being seen as a major development, but experts point out that several challenges remain. These include high hosting fees demanded by F1 , the need for significant upgrades to the existing circuit, and clarity on tax structures and government approvals. Additionally, Formula 1 already operates a record 24-race calendar, making any new addition highly competitive.

Despite these hurdles, interest from private companies and renewed government support have revived discussions around India’s re-entry into the global motorsport map. However, until a formal agreement is signed, the 2027 return remains aspirational rather than confirmed .

If successful, the comeback of F1 could mark a significant moment for Indian motorsport and restore the country’s presence on the global racing stage.
