India End Asian Weightlifting Meet With 11 Medals, Women’s Team Claims Third Spot

India signed off from the Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships with a creditable performance, finishing 11th in the overall medal standings while the women’s team delivered a standout effort to secure third place in the continental rankings at Gandhinagar on Sunday.

Competing against some of Asia’s strongest weightlifting nations, the Indian contingent collected 11 medals overall, one silver and 10 bronze , in a championship dominated by powerhouse nations China and North Korea .

While India could not challenge for the top positions in the medal tally, the women’s squad produced an inspiring campaign throughout the tournament. The Indian women amassed 487 points to finish behind only China (578 points) and Chinese Taipei (491 points) in the team standings, underlining the growing depth and consistency in the country’s women’s weightlifting programme.

The Indian men’s team also showed promise and ended fifth with 379 points , though China once again stamped its authority by topping the men’s rankings with 593 points .

China emerged as the undisputed champion of the event, finishing with a massive haul of 21 gold, 12 silver and eight bronze medals . North Korea claimed second place with 18 gold medals , while Chinese Taipei secured third.

The championship also witnessed an extraordinary display of elite lifting standards, with competitors breaking 25 world records and setting 27 new Asian records during the competition.

Among the standout performers of the tournament, North Korea’s Ri Suk was adjudged the best female lifter in the 63kg category , while China’s He Yueji earned the honour of best male lifter in the 65kg division .

The continental event featured participation from 30 nations and brought together 172 lifters , including 97 men and 75 women , making it one of the strongest editions of the championship in recent years.

For India, the performances, especially from the women’s team, offered another encouraging sign ahead of future international competitions and reinforced the country’s steady rise in Asian weightlifting.
