India-Egypt Defence Ties Enter New Phase With Joint Focus on Terror and Technology

India and Egypt are significantly expanding their defence and strategic partnership , with both countries intensifying cooperation in counter-terrorism, maritime security, military exercises and defence manufacturing amid rising regional and global security concerns.

The growing partnership was reaffirmed during the recent India-Egypt Joint Working Group meeting on Counter-Terrorism held in New Delhi, where the two nations called for coordinated global action against all UN-designated terrorist organisations , their affiliates, financiers and proxy groups. Both sides strongly condemned terrorism in all forms, including cross-border terrorism , while reiterating a policy of zero tolerance against extremist violence.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) , India and Egypt reviewed a wide range of emerging threats, including terrorist recruitment, terror financing and the misuse of advanced technologies by extremist groups. The two countries also expressed concern over the increasing use of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cyber platforms and artificial intelligence for terrorist activities.

The discussions reflected the broader transformation of India-Egypt ties into a rapidly growing strategic relationship. Bilateral relations were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cairo, following a landmark defence cooperation agreement signed in 2022 during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Egypt.

Military cooperation has since accelerated through structured defence dialogue and joint exercises. The annual special forces exercise “Cyclone” has emerged as a major platform for enhancing interoperability between the armed forces of both countries. The latest edition of the exercise, held in Egypt in April 2026, focused on counter-terror operations, desert warfare and hostage rescue drills .

India and Egypt are also increasing cooperation in the maritime domain due to Egypt’s strategic location around the Suez Canal and the Red Sea , which are critical for global trade and energy routes. During the recent Joint Defence Committee meeting in Cairo, both countries agreed to strengthen naval engagement and maritime security coordination.

Defence industrial collaboration is emerging as another major area of cooperation. India showcased its growing indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative, while Egypt explored opportunities for co-development and defence procurement diversification.

Analysts believe the growing India-Egypt partnership reflects a larger geopolitical shift, with both nations seeking stronger strategic coordination amid evolving security challenges across West Asia, Africa and the Indo-Pacific region .
