India Demands ‘Thorough Investigation’ Into ‘Anti-Hindu, Racist’ Chicago Temple Attack Plot
India has demanded a thorough investigation into an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, after US authorities arrested a 19-year-old man accused of planning the attack. New Delhi also flagged growing concerns over racist hostility and anti-India hate in the United States.
“There is a need for greater vigilance, zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence, and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of the Indian community,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, urging Washington to bring those responsible to justice and prevent similar incidents.
The suspect, Alexandros Paporakis, a Taco Bell cashier from Palatine, Illinois, was arrested on October 11. He faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a weapon. A judge ordered him detained before trial on Wednesday, October 14. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.
According to prosecutors, Paporakis allegedly drove towards a Hindu temple on October 11 carrying an AR-style rifle and approximately 300 rounds of ammunition, along with tactical equipment. The rifle reportedly jammed when he attempted to fire, forcing him to flee.
Investigators said Paporakis later searched online for ways to fix the weapon and contacted a co-worker, describing the failed attempt. He allegedly shared messages through Signal, a video showing the rifle malfunctioning and a photograph of himself wearing a tactical vest. He had reportedly told colleagues that Sunday would be “a special day”.
The co-worker and another employee alerted police. Officers from Palatine and Mount Prospect subsequently arrested Paporakis near his residence.
A search of his home uncovered a rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, ammunition, body armour, Nazi-related items and a gas canister bearing a slur directed at South Asians.
Authorities also examined an eight-page document titled 'Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)'. Prosecutors allege it described Indian, Jewish and African American people as “subhumans” and outlined plans for mass violence. Paporakis reportedly identified himself as a white supremacist and neo-Nazi.
Investigators believe the Sri Venkateswara Swami (Balaji) Temple may have been the intended target, although the precise location remains unconfirmed. Police contacted Hindu places of worship in the area, and the FBI is assisting the investigation. Authorities said the case remains open as they examine whether additional charges are warranted.
