In a landmark moment for inclusive sports, the Indian national deaf cricket team clinched the first-ever Asian Deaf Cricket Association (ADCA) T20I Asia Cup title by defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Wednesday. The triumph not only marks a sporting achievement but also highlights the growing prominence of deaf and differently‑abled sports in India .

The week‑long tournament featured three national teams, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal , competing in a round‑robin format before the top two qualified for the final. India began with a four‑wicket win over Sri Lanka and followed it up with a dominating 10‑wicket victory against Nepal. Sri Lanka and Nepal also exchanged wins, but India’s consistent performances, including a narrow one‑run win against Sri Lanka and a nine‑wicket win over Nepal, secured their final berth.

In the title match, Sai Akash was adjudged Player of the Match for his blistering 27 off 14 balls and crucial bowling contributions. Sri Lanka’s Gimadu L Malkam shone throughout the series, earning the Player of the Series and best batter honours, while compatriot Gihan Lasidu D’ Silva took the most wickets, underlining the high skill level on display.

The Asia Cup is a significant milestone for deaf sports in India, bringing much‑needed visibility and respect to athletes who compete at elite levels despite hearing challenges. Deaf cricket in India has been nurtured through bodies such as the Indian Deaf Cricket Association , which provides platforms for training, talent identification and international competition.

Experts say this success highlights the need for greater recognition, funding and infrastructure for differently‑abled athletes. Despite the efforts of organisations like ADCA and IDCA, many still face limited access to professional facilities, sponsorships and media coverage. Greater government support, corporate backing, and integration into national sports policy are essential. With the right support, India’s deaf cricketers can compete, inspire and excel internationally, making this historic triumph not just a trophy but a call to invest in the potential of all athletes, regardless of ability.
