India produced a commanding second-half comeback to defeat Japan 4-1 in the final of the men’s Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) on Thursday, securing their third consecutive title and sixth overall in the tournament’s history.

The defending champions were stunned early when Japan’s Kazumasa Matsumoto scored a field goal in the third minute to give his side a surprise lead. Japan maintained their advantage through the first half, frustrating the Indian attack with disciplined defending and goalkeeper Kisho Kuroda’s timely interventions.

However, India returned after the half-time break with renewed intensity and turned the contest around with four goals in a stunning 12-minute spell.

Shilanand Lakra brought India level in the 42nd minute, converting a rebound from a penalty corner after Aditya Arjun Lalage set up the opportunity. Six minutes later, Dilpreet Singh put India ahead with a brilliant reverse-hit finish following an excellent assist from vice-captain Hardik Singh.

India tightened their grip on the final in the 53rd minute when Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner with precision. Just a minute later, Vivek Sagar Prasad completed the scoring with a powerful strike from the top of the circle after Lakra’s initial attempt was saved.

Japan earned a late penalty corner with just 12 seconds remaining, but failed to convert as India completed an unbeaten campaign.

The victory added another chapter to India’s dominance in the competition. The country had previously lifted the trophy in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. The latest triumph also marks India’s third successive title after their victories in 2023 and 2024.

The final was particularly special for Hardik Singh, who completed his 200th international appearance for India. He played a crucial role in controlling the midfield and linking the defence with the forward line.

India’s remarkable second-half response ensured that Japan’s early breakthrough counted for little as the hosts celebrated another continental title.
