India's push to become a global destination for higher education received a significant boost on Tuesday as the Ministry of Education granted approval to three internationally renowned universities from the United Kingdom and Australia to establish campuses in the country. The move is being seen as a major milestone in the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 , which seeks to internationalise India's higher education ecosystem and provide students with access to world-class education within the country.

The University of Bristol and the University of York , both from the UK, have been approved to set up campuses in Mumbai , while Australia's University of New South Wales (UNSW) will establish its campus in Bengaluru . The Letters of Approval (LoAs) were handed over by Higher Education Secretary and UGC Chairman Dr. Vineet Joshi in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan .

According to the ministry, the arrival of these institutions aligns with the government's vision of promoting " internationalisation at home " by bringing globally reputed universities to India while also encouraging Indian institutions to expand their international footprint. The campuses are expected to strengthen academic collaboration, research partnerships, and industry engagement in two of India's leading innovation hubs.

The approved universities plan to offer a range of future-focused programmes tailored to emerging global and domestic workforce demands. These include courses in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Finance, Economics, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Creative Industries, Immersive Arts, Renewable Energy, Health, Transport, and Education Technology . Officials believe such programmes will help equip students with skills required in rapidly evolving sectors.

The latest approvals further expand India's growing foreign university ecosystem. Earlier this month, the University of Liverpool received approval to establish a campus in Bengaluru, while the University of Southampton has already commenced operations in India. Additionally, international institutions such as Deakin University , University of Wollongong , and Queen's University Belfast have established campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat .

The government noted that the initiative reflects increasing global confidence in India's higher education sector. With nearly nine lakh Indian students pursuing education abroad each year, policymakers believe the presence of top-ranked international universities will provide students with globally recognised degrees, international academic exposure, and research opportunities without the financial burden of relocating overseas.

As more foreign institutions enter the Indian market under the UGC's 2023 regulations , India is steadily positioning itself as a global knowledge hub , advancing the broader vision of Viksit Bharat while reshaping the future of higher education in the country.
