India Carving Distinct Global Sporting Identity, Says Rajnath Singh
India is steadily moving beyond its traditional identity as a cricket and hockey-centric nation and is carving out a broader presence across global sporting arenas, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday. He noted that this shift reflects a significant transformation in the country’s sports ecosystem over the past decade.
Highlighting earlier challenges, Singh pointed out that sports in India once suffered from limited infrastructure, low participation, and lack of recognition as a viable career. However, sustained policy support and increased investment have led to the expansion of modern sports facilities, even in smaller towns and rural areas, enabling wider access to opportunities.
Flagship initiatives such as the Khelo India have played a crucial role in boosting grassroots participation and identifying young talent, while also reviving traditional sports and promoting a structured sporting culture nationwide.
He also emphasised the growing participation of women in sports through dedicated initiatives, marking a significant step towards inclusivity and social empowerment.
While India’s sporting base is expanding rapidly, the key challenge remains whether this momentum can translate into consistent success on the global stage, particularly in major events like the Olympics.
