India can change the global arena, says Palestinian Ambassador

Palestinian Ambassador Abdullah Abu Shawesh, has praised India as a major global player capable of influencing international politics, highlighting the country’s democratic strength and diplomatic clout.

In an exclusive conversation, Shawesh said, “When we talk about India, we talk about the largest democracy in the world, home to 1.4 billion people. India has served in the United Nations for eight years, and when India takes a stand there, it has the power to shape the international arena.”

The Ambassador also acknowledged India’s consistent support for Palestine. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government continues to stand with the Palestinian people, including contributing USD 5 million annually to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). These contributions, alongside India’s leadership on key resolutions under PM Modi’s chairmanship, reflect a strong commitment to our cause,” he noted.

Shawesh emphasized the close relationship between India and Palestine at the leadership level. “President Mahmoud Abbas maintains a warm, constructive relationship with PM Modi. Official communications from President Abbas have sought India’s assistance on multiple issues, and we are confident that this excellent cooperation will continue.”

Tracing the roots of the India-Palestine relationship, Shawesh said it dates back to the 1930s, when both nations were pursuing independence movements. “India’s support for Palestinian revolutions during 1936-39 laid the foundation for our long-standing partnership. India was also the first non-Arab, non-Muslim country to recognize Palestine and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974, affirming its commitment as a legitimate voice for the Palestinian people,” he added.

Reflecting on history and diplomacy, Shawesh concluded, “India’s political weight, respect on the global stage, and moral support have always been invaluable for Palestine. We trust that India will continue to be a steadfast ally.”
