India Batter KL Rahul Reflects on Career, Injuries, and Family Life

India batter KL Rahul has revealed that the thought of retirement has crossed his mind but emphasized that the moment to step away from cricket is still “some time away.” In an interview with former England captain Kevin Pietersen on YouTube, the 33-year-old Bengaluru cricketer said he would not drag on when the time comes, noting that life beyond cricket is equally important.

“I’ve thought about it. I don’t think retirement is going to be that difficult,” Rahul said. “If you’re honest with yourself, when it’s time , it’s time . There’s no point dragging it. Obviously, I’m some time away.”

Rahul, a mainstay in India’s Test and ODI teams, has amassed 4,053 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 35.8 , 3,360 runs in 94 ODIs at 50.9 , and 2,265 runs in 72 T20Is at an average of 37.75 with a strike rate of 139 .

He explained that his grounded approach toward cricket and life makes the decision easier. “I don’t consider myself a superstar or too important . Cricket in our country will carry on. Cricket in the world will carry on. There are more important things in life . Ever since I’ve had my first baby , the way you look at life is completely different,” Rahul added, highlighting his focus on family after marrying Bollywood actress Athiya Shetty in March 2023 .

Rahul also opened up about the challenges of dealing with repeated injuries , calling the mental struggle of recovery the “hardest battle.” He said, “It’s not the physical pain from the physio or surgeon . It’s the mental battle where your mind just gives up. When it happens so many times, your mind is like, ‘You’ve done enough.’ You’ve been lucky enough that cricket has given you enough, and you can survive for the next few years.”

Despite these reflections, Rahul remains committed to the present , with plans to play for Karnataka in a crucial Ranji Trophy match against Punjab in Mohali on Thursday.
