India and Bangladesh are set to hold their bi-annual Director General-level border talks in New Delhi from June 8 to 11, marking the first such high-level engagement since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) assumed power in Dhaka earlier this year.

The talks will bring together Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Praveen Kumar and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui to discuss a range of security and border management issues.

According to officials, the agenda is expected to include border fencing, illegal infiltration, cross-border crimes, smuggling, human trafficking, attacks on BSF personnel, and the repatriation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants. India is also likely to raise concerns over delays in accepting apprehended Bangladeshi nationals, activities of insurgent groups, and drone-related airspace violations.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, is expected to highlight allegations of civilian deaths along the border, an issue that has periodically surfaced in bilateral discussions.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km border, of which around 860 km remains unfenced due to geographical and logistical challenges. More than half of the border runs through West Bengal, where fencing and infiltration remain politically sensitive issues.

The last DG-level meeting was held in Dhaka in August 2025 under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. A joint record of discussions is expected to be signed at the conclusion of the talks on June 11.

The upcoming dialogue assumes added significance as both countries navigate a new political phase. The border talks will reveal how India and Bangladesh manage longstanding security concerns while adapting to changing political realities and evolving bilateral priorities.
